Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic material formed into extruded multi-wall sheets that are lightweight, virtually unbreakable, and provide high impact resistance with good thermal insulation due to air-filled cavities. It offers excellent optical clarity, UV protection options, and fire behavior rated B-s1,d0 or C-s1,d0 per EN 13501-1, suitable for long-term exterior use.

Used in architecture for skylights, roofing, cladding, partitions, and noise barriers, often paired with glass, concrete, and steel in cultural buildings, museums, housing, and adaptive reuse projects. Its lightweight nature and insulating properties support applications like vaulted roofs, patio covers, and thermal insulation glazing.

Multi-wall structure reduces raw material use compared to solid sheets but polycarbonate production remains energy-intensive; EPDs indicate moderate embodied carbon with potential offsets from longevity and lower weight reducing structural demands. Recycling is limited by contamination risks in construction waste.
