Tuff is a porous, lightweight pyroclastic rock formed from volcanic material with compressive strength of approximately 244 N/mm² and hardness of 4-6 on the Mohs scale. Rhenish tuffs from the Eifel region, particularly Ettringen and Weibern varieties, have been used extensively in European construction from Roman times through the 20th century due to their workability and aesthetic qualities.
Tuff serves as a dimension stone for load-bearing and non-load-bearing applications including facades, mullions, corner stones, sills, and monumental sculpture. It is particularly suited to civic and public spaces where its light coloration and warm tones contribute to distinctive regional architectural character, as seen in Romanesque and medieval European building traditions.
Tuff extraction and processing from quarries like those in Ettringen requires consideration of transportation distances and embodied energy, particularly when imported across significant distances. Restoration projects using new tuff should account for potential material sourcing impacts, though the material's longevity when properly detailed can offset some extraction costs over extended service life.
